🧺 Old-School Pantry Wisdom: Use It or Lose It?
How to tell what’s still good, even if it’s expired
☕ Tea Bags
- Best Before: 1–2 years after packaging
- ✅ Still Good If: Smell fresh, sealed, dry, no mold
- ❌ Toss If: Smells musty, damp, moldy, or flavorless
- ✔️ Tip: Steep longer or use 2 bags if weak
🥫 Canned Goods (Soups, Veggies, Meat)
- Best Before: 2–5 years (can last longer!)
- ✅ Still Good If: Can is sealed, no rust, dents, or bulges
- ❌ Toss If: Can is bloated, leaking, rusted, or hisses when opened
- ✔️ Tip: Smell and inspect after opening; if in doubt, toss it out
🧂 Baking Soda
- Best Before: 2 years (for baking)
- ✅ Still Good If: Still fizzy when mixed with vinegar
- ❌ Toss If: No fizz = no leavening power
- ✔️ Tip: Old baking soda still works as deodorizer, cleaner, or fire extinguisher
🥣 Flour
- Best Before: 6–12 months (whole wheat = shorter)
- ✅ Still Good If: Smells fresh, no bugs, no mustiness
- ❌ Toss If: Sour smell, clumps, or tiny bugs (weevils)
- ✔️ Tip: Store in fridge or freezer to extend life
🧈 Cooking Oils
- Best Before: 1–2 years
- ✅ Still Good If: Smells neutral or mild
- ❌ Toss If: Smells like paint, sour, or rancid
- ✔️ Tip: Store away from heat/light — use for non-food hacks like squeaky doors if old
🧂 Salt & Sugar
- Best Before: Indefinite (yes, really!)
- ✅ Still Good If: No clumps or contamination
- ✔️ Tip: Break up clumps with a fork or dry rice trick (add a few grains to shaker)
🍯 Honey
- Best Before: Never expires!
- ✅ Still Good If: Crystallized? Just heat gently
- ✔️ Tip: Natural antibiotic + sore throat remedy
🥫 Powdered Milk
- Best Before: 1–2 years
- ✅ Still Good If: Stored cool and dry, no odor
- ❌ Toss If: Yellow, clumpy, or sour smelling
